What Goes Into a Professional Water Heater Installation

Every installation looks a little different depending on the type of unit and your home’s existing setup, but our technicians follow the same careful installation process on every job.

Removing the Old Heater

We start by shutting off the power at the circuit breaker or gas supply and the cold water supply line to the old water heater. The old tank is drained completely, usually through a garden hose connected to the drain valve, before the old unit is fully disconnected and removed using an appliance dolly if needed.

Setting and Connecting the New Unit

The new heater is placed in a drain pan to help prevent water damage if a leak ever develops, and leveled before any connections are made.

We connect the water and gas lines, making sure the water lines are properly measured and secured, using flexible hoses and compression fittings in many cases for an easier reconnection later, and use Teflon tape on threaded fittings to help prevent leaks.

A manual shutoff valve and a 3/4” discharge pipe are installed for the temperature and pressure relief valve for proper drainage, and gas units are connected using approved gas-rated fittings with attention to proper venting and the pilot light.

Electrical Connections

For electric water heaters, we remove the access panel and install strain relief on the power wires entering the electrical junction box. We connect the ground wire to the green screw and ensure all wiring meets code and is secure to avoid electrical shock.

Testing and Final Checks

Once everything is connected, we open the cold water supply valve and a nearby hot water faucet so the tank can fill completely and let air escape before restoring power at the circuit breaker or turning on the gas and lighting the pilot light.

We let the water run briefly and check every connection for leaks, including gas leaks.

We test the unit for proper operation and confirm it is functioning correctly. We review basic maintenance with you, such as periodically flushing the tank to clear sediment buildup and setting the thermostat to 120°F for efficiency and safety.

Every installation includes a temperature and pressure relief valve to help prevent tank pressure from building to unsafe levels. For homes using gas heaters, we also recommend installing carbon monoxide detectors according to local recommendations.

We verify your home’s water pressure falls within a safe range, generally between 50 and 60 PSI, since pressure that’s too high can shorten a water heater’s lifespan, and we inspect the venting for adequate ventilation and proper drainage.
